Consultancy and Design Services
As well as our education and training activities iSLI is also a hub of complex silicon systems design and high functionality MEMS enabled silicon system design, augmented by our considerable skills in mixed signal, embedded systems and reconfigurable electronics. All these skills are made available to the commercial sector, from large multinationals down to pre start ups, on a commercial contractual basis.
Our highly skilled Design Services team is populated by industrially experienced engineers, who support our clients with systems design of the highest quality. Often contracted to undertake early stage and/or high risk development projects we use our unique blend of skills to differentiate our commercial offering. Through our intermediate positioning between academia and commerce, iSLI is exceptionally well placed to provide critical links to mediate the transfer of research knowledge into product demonstrators.

iDesign - MEMS design and prototyping:
iSLI has already started to forge key partnerships with industry to deliver original MEMS commercial design and prototyping services for the UK. Under the banner of the UK MNT Network iSLI has established a publicly accessible design centre [called iDesign] focused on silicon based MEMS technology. Through iDesign, iSLI provides the commercial sector with access to expertise and knowledge transfer for the rapid development of product prototypes.
The iDesign capability acts as the design partner to the SemeMEMS protoype manufacturing facility, provided to the UK MNT Network by Semefab Limited. By combining the IP development capabilities of iSLI through iDesign with the proven manufacturing capabilities of Semefab through SemeMEMS, the partnership can provide early stage product developers with a robust route to market.
The institute has a long standing working relationship with, and has received significant support for iDesign from, Coventor Inc. As the leading MEMS EDA player, Coventor provides a comprehensive suite of software tools for the development of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), microfluidics and semiconductor process applications.
High value added development outcomes which can be used by industry are now actively being pursued. Targeted areas include bio-medical, photonics, micro-fluidics, and integrated control applications.
iSLI Software Hub - Free of Charge access to leading edge EDA toolsets
iSLI will further support the UKs indigenous electronics community by delivering a software hub providing free of charge access to a variety of leading edge industry design tools for to SMEs and start-ups, significantly reducing risks for these organisations. Our first collaborative deal is with Cre8ventures to provide free access to Mentor Graphics’ leading edge Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software to start-ups in an incubator style environment. The software will be hosted at iSLI’s Alba Centre campus.
