Distance Learning

The electronics industry is undergoing significant technical change requiring ongoing professional development on the part of even highly skilled engineers. The Institute has addressed these demands through the introduction of its distance learning programme, via a concentration of the understanding the process of SoC design, the use of IP blocks and the architecture of modern electronic systems. The curriculum provides an opportunity to acquire advanced skills in hardware engineering, embedded software and systems architecture.

The programme delivers high quality, well supported and flexible SoC teaching, allowing students to accommodate their skill-development needs around employment and personal commitments.

Modules are web-based, with each course organised into a number of study units. A study unit typically features the main learning text, questions and answers and practical exercises. In addition, each course features tutor marked assignments and an exam.

Coursework & Examinations

Master’s-level modules courses are provided on a standalone, continuing professional development basis by design engineers seeking to improve their skills and experience. Students work independently at their own pace, allowing them to conveniently accommodate their skill-development needs around employment and personal commitments. Material is delivered via ‘Moodle’, a web-based online education environment providing virtual classrooms, allowing students to interact with their peers and communicate with course tutors.

A certificate of attendance is provided at the end of each module. Credits from the successful completion of the entire module may be awarded retrospectively as approved prior learning should the candidate then wish to register for a formal qualification, e.g., Postgraduate Diploma or MSc degree.

Modules are assessed by a combination of coursework and examination (normally 40% coursework / 60% exam).

Cost

Modules are priced at £1200 (15 credit modules) and £600 (8 credit modules). The fee covers access to learning materials, tutor support and examination fees, but does not cover internet access costs, or any travel and accommodation associated with the course.
