EngD/PhD Differences

EngD is a radical alternative to the PhD; a vocationally-oriented doctorate designed to:

  • Meet the needs of industry and enhance its knowledge base.
  • Provide graduates with challenging research in an industrial context.
  • Prepare graduates for leadership positions in industry.
  • Produce exploitable outcomes from research.
  • Generate partnerships between academia and industry.

The Engineering Doctorate is identical in academic standing to a conventional PhD and graduates are awarded the title ‘Dr’.

The real difference involves undertaking a project which tackles a genuine commercial problem in a real-world environment, and offers the chance for the student to develop thorough research and commercial skills, making EngD graduates extremely employable.

Assessment is by viva following the submission of a doctoral thesis. Candidates must also satisfy all of the taught requirements of the programme.
