Programme Structure

EngD studentThe full-time EngD lasts four years and part-time study is not available. The programme normally commences in September.

Research Project (3 years)

A key component of EngD is an industrial research project placement, normally of at least three years, supported by an industrial partner. Research Engineers normally spend this time at the sponsor’s premises.

REs complete a research project based on a real problem faced by their sponsor. Projects must be in the mainstream, demonstrating innovation in the application of knowledge to the electronics industry and making significant contribution to the performance of the sponsoring company. It must include a thorough analysis of opinions, based on best practice elsewhere, and demonstrate skills such as project planning and financial control.

Taught Programme (1 Year)

Combining training in specialist technical subjects with business and management modules relevance to the engineering profession, the taught component is an assessed and integral part of the degree.

Technical modules are typically drawn from the MSc in System Level Integration. Others, delivered by the Institute’s partner universities and occasionally by external institutions, may be available in order to tailor taught study to the particular needs of the individual and the project.

For business modules, REs select from MBA programmes offered by HWU Edinburgh Business School or the Strathclyde Graduate Business School, or undertake a tailored work-based learning project under the supervision of the University of Glasgow.

Modules are normally delivered on site at a partner university, and some distance learning options are available.

Supervision & Assessment

Each project is supervised by two members of academic staff, as well as an industry advisor. Academic supervisors ensure the project is of academic equivalence to a PhD; the industry advisor drives the project to guarantee that the research makes a significant contribution to the performance of the company and has a commercial outcome.

The RE, supervisors and advisor normally meet quarterly to ensure that the project remains on target. A formal annual assessment of research work is required for academic progression.
