Title: Image tracking utilising a discrete wavelet transform and image flow analysis
Research Engineer: Michael McErlean
Sponsor: Salent Technologies
Academic Supervision: Prof Roger Clarke and Dr Keith Brown, Heriot-Watt University

The project will develop the underlying technology required to track a target object using multiple cameras in a crowded area, with the system automatically ‘handing over’ the target from one camera to the next.

The project will evolve and build on the work currently under development by Salent Technologies Ltd. The initial concept for implementing the tracking is based on the principles of domain independent motion processing.

The project utilises wavelet transforms and image flow analysis techniques to determine the location and track the object. The proposed techniques and algorithms should overcome many of the problems associated with tracking an object.

Initial research will be required both to validate the concept, and to provide mathematical models to verify the approach. Control models for the cameras will need to be developed that feed into the tracking algorithm.
